UP Mindanao constituents hold alternative learning activities on EDSA People Power Day

University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao constituents conducted alternative learning activities on EDSA People Power  Day on February 25, 2025.

UP Mindanao Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao, in her Memorandum 25-13, “encouraged all faculty and students to actively engage in alternative learning activities instead of regular classes.”  This was in line with UP President Angelo Jimenez’s Administrative Order 25-17, declaring February 25, 2025, as an Alternative Learning Day in the University.

“For our undergraduate students, this is particularly significant, as none were born during this period. Through meaningful discussions, creative projects, and reflective activities, we can ensure that the lessons of EDSA continue to inspire and guide us in shaping a just and democratic society,” she stated.

In an online forum titled, “EDSA Revolution: Sa Pananaw ng Kawani ng UP Mindanao” (in the photo above), organized by Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, REPS, and the workers’ associations, some 45 non-teaching personnel shared their individual perspectives. “Our discussion or conversation revolved around the experiences of those around during that period and, secondly, what is EDSA in the perception of an ordinary employee,” said Pahinungod director Michael Gatela. Although far from EDSA, some recalled weekly school prayers supporting the movement, others of regular street protests, some of divided loyalties, while others listened and learned. “Tuloy-tuloy pa din ang EDSA,” said a young forum member. “So that future generations know and because we all benefit from the people who made the EDSA revolution happen,” she said.

In other campus events, the UP Literary Society organized the “Film Screening of Martial Law Documentaries” on the afternoon of February 25. “We must continue to write, educate, and resist any forms of rewriting the struggles and history,” they stated.

In its statement, the UP Mindanao – Architecture Student Council said, “It has become our obligation as Filipino citizens to uphold the morals of those who preceded us and honor the heroism of those who have fought for the freedom we have today.”

The UP Mindanao University Student Council, in its statement, said, “Patuloy nating patunayan na ang diwa ng ating pakikibaka ay patunay sa taglay na lakas ng ating edukasyon at malayang kaisipan.”

The Himati student publication reported the gathering of progressive groups in Davao City at Freedom Park, “amplifying the calls for accountability and justice amid worsening political and economic unrest,” they reported.
