SOM, DFSC food research for children in GIDA and flood-prone areas, for implementation

A University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao interdisciplinary research team composed of the School of Management (SOM) and the Department of Food Science and Chemistry (DFSC) met with their counterparts from the DOST’s Phil. Council for Health Research and Development for a research project pre-implementation meeting on March 6, 2025.  The research project for implementation is titled “Assessment of Nutrition and Development of Appropriate Food Product Intervention Among Children in Flood-prone and Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas in Davao de Oro, Philippines.” The University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao is the Implementing Agency for the two-year research project with Prof. Pedro Alviola IV as the project leader.

The study aims to assess the nutrient intakes and other factors affecting the nutritional status of 6-10-year-old children in these identified areas and develop appropriate food products. It also aims to determine the factors affecting the nutritional status of these children. Finally, it aims to develop policy recommendations and work for the implementation of these policy recommendations in collaboration with nutrition offices of the local government units of Davao de Oro Province, namely Monkayo, Compostela, New Bataan, Nabunturan, Montevista, and Mawab municipalities. The Davao de Oro State College and the DOST’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute will likewise be collaborators.

The research project is under the Health-Nutrition & Food Safety priority area of the DOST’s Harmonized National Research and Development Agenda (HNRDA).
