UP Mindanao sectoral representatives, students, and unit heads contributed ideas, concerns, and desired outcomes to complete a draft strategic plan in the university’s strategic planning workshop held from July 28 to 30, 2025, at the Center for the Advancement of Research in Mindanao (CARIM) Building.
The participants crafted plans around Chancellor Lyre Anni E. Murao’s vision, anchored on three pillars, namely, Education 5.0, Transformational Leadership and Governance, and Sustainable Campus Development.
“Today’s learners are poised to confront a future that is vastly different from the way we experience the world now,” said Chancellor Murao. “In response, educational systems must undergo continuous adaptation and reform. The current educational system needs radical rethinking to respond effectively to the evolving needs of society,” she said.
Faculty members assembled around the pillar of Education 5.0 to contribute strategies for the development of university professionals and students, academic expansion, and inclusive access. They added ideas to address emerging technologies and digital transformation, internationalization and global engagement, to name a few.
Administrative unit heads and student leaders convened around the pillar of Transformational Leadership and Governance to discuss ways to enhance governance and accountability, achieve distributed leadership, and define roles and responsibilities. They shared ways to strengthen social Infrastructure, mold organizational culture, and enhance information sharing, among other concerns.
Finally, the pillar of Sustainable Campus Development attracted multi-disciplinary experts who shared ideas for campus planning with technology integration, continuity strategies, disaster preparedness, and resource management, for a culturally-sensitive campus community.
Chancellor Murao gave the keynote message to set the planning sessions. College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz, College of Science and Mathematics Dean Cleto L. Nanola Jr., and School of Management Dean Aurelia Luzviminda V. Gomez presented college updates to provide context. Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) Ma. Stella Salazar and VC for Administration Leo Manuel Estaña, likewise, gave updates from their offices.
University Student Council Chairpersons Heroine Marish B. Fernandez (BA Communication and Media Arts) and Lara Felescoso (BACMA) reiterated the student demands, and union heads Asst. Prof. Rommel R. Real and Administrative Officer Analiza S. Fulvadora did likewise.
Ms. Marides Virola-Gardiola served as the planning facilitator, assisted by Executive Assistant Mr. Allan V. Villlanueva and Public Affairs head Ms. Janessa V. Villota.
