UP Mindanao Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao and Davao City Third District Congressman Isidro T. Ungab led the book launch for “Building Legacies: Unraveling the History and Impact of the Davao City-UP Sports Complex” at the DC-UP Sports Complex Stadium on February 20, 2025, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of UP Mindanao. The book narrates the project collaboration between the Davao City government and UP Mindanao, which began with UP Mindanao’s creation thirty years earlier.
Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte sent a congratulatory message and pledged the city’s continuing support. “This remarkable publication not only highlights the journey of the Davao City-UP Sports Complex but also focuses on its profound influence on our community,” he stated.
Department of Human Kinetics chairperson Asst. Prof. Jezreel Abarca shared the project experience. “This book is about a place that has meant much to so many- a home for athletes, a space for personal growth, and a symbol of pride for our community,” she said.
Chancellor Murao cited the significance of the book. “The story of the sports complex is very rich, and we are glad that the story is now memorialized in this book. We are thankful to all our partners for erecting this sports complex, which is instrumental in using sports as a way of promoting peace and development in our Mindanao region,” she said.
Congressman Ungab narrated the projects’ beginnings, fruition, and ongoing journey. “Our work continues for our athletes and students who do not have to travel far to have this facility. When improvements in facilities and utilities are made, the sports complex will be self-generating,” he said.
The ceremony featured an unveiling of the book cover, a presentation of the book, and a signing ceremony for copies of the book. The book will be available at both the UP Mindanao Library and the Davao City Library and Information Center.
