UP Mindanao’s 4th-year BS Computer Science student, Sharmaigne Angelie Mabano, delivered a talk that bridged the worlds of space exploration and programming during PyCon (Python Annual Conference) Taiwan 2025, held on September 5–7, 2025, in Taipei City’s Xinyi District.
The conference gathered innovators, developers, and technology enthusiasts from around the globe to celebrate Python’s transformative role in research and development.
Sharmaigne’s talk, “Exploring NASA’s Use of Python: Applications in Space Research and Data Analysis,” showcased how NASA leveraged Python across mission-critical systems, from analyzing solar data to powering spacecraft like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). She highlighted open-source projects such as SunPy and Fermipy, and explained how tools like NumPy and Astropy enabled researchers to process astronomical data and run simulations of complex space systems.
More than a technical deep dive, Sharmaigne’s session was designed to be engaging and accessible to both technical and non-technical audiences. Attendees gained an inspiring overview of how Python powered some of the world’s most ambitious space missions and how its flexibility and simplicity continued to drive innovation in unexpected fields.
Her participation in PyCon Taiwan 2025 underscores the growing role of young Filipino voices in the global tech scene, proving that student-developers can contribute meaningfully to international conversations on programming, research, and innovation. This opportunity shows that the UP Mindanao BS Computer Science program is geared toward internationalization, producing globally competitive students who can represent the university in world-class venues.
