The Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics (BSAM) program is a 4-year degree program that provides graduates with the ability to identify, formulate, model, and analyze real-world problems and find their solutions using operations research techniques, geospatial tools, and statistical methods. It also provides competencies in decision making analysis, optimization, mathematical modelling and simulation and the ability to implement and develop computer programs to facilitate complex computations.
The BS Applied Mathematics (BSAM) program at the University of the Philippines Mindanao was adopted from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, University of the Philippines Los Baños. It was one of the four pioneering degree programs launched in 1996 when UP Mindanao was established.
PLO 1 – Develop a holistic understanding of the new general education (GE) courses.
PLO 2 – Master the fundamental concepts of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science.
PLO 3 – Raise analytical thinking skills through covering advance mathematics courses.
PLO 4 – Identify, model and analyze real-world problems using operations research (OR) techniques, GIS and statistical methods to aid in the efficiency of the solution process.
PLO 5 – Implement and possibly develop computer programs for ease in complex computations.
PLO 6 – Apply OR and statistical techniques to scientific research practice.
PLO 7 – Be prepared in pursuing a master’s degree in applied mathematics, statistic and computer science.
The goal of this program is to produce dynamic, adaptive, highly competent graduates with strong mathematical and computational skills, and research capabilities.
Graduates of the program may work in the following fields:
Software Analyst
Technical Consultant
Mathematician
Mathematical Software Programmer / Analyst
Mathematical Statistician
