Two books by College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) Dean and Professor Jhoanna Lynn Cruz have been named finalists in the 43rd National Book Awards.

Presented annually by the National Book Development Board in partnership with the Filipino Critics Circle, the National Book Awards honour outstanding books across various disciplines that contribute to Philippine literature, culture, and scholarship. Both titles, published in 2024, were selected for their critical insight and scholarly merit.

Lugar Lang: Dispatch from Davao (Ateneo University Press) has been shortlisted for Best Book of Nonfiction Prose in English. The book offers reflective and incisive narratives grounded in place, memory, and lived experience in Mindanao, particularly Davao, providing readers with nuanced perspectives often absent from dominant national discourses.

Meanwhile, More Mindanawon than We Admit (Vibal Foundation, Inc.) is a finalist for Best Book in the Social Sciences. The volume brings together contributions from several UP Mindanao faculty members and advances critical discussions in Mindanao Studies, foregrounding local knowledge, histories, and perspectives that challenge conventional frameworks in Philippine social research.

The winners of the 43rd National Book Awards will be announced in February. The recognition highlights UP Mindanao’s growing contribution to national conversations in literature and the social sciences, particularly in amplifying Mindanawon voices and scholarship.
