Faculty Members As Plenary Speaker, Inductee At NRCP Conference, Assembly

Asst. Prof. Jon Marx P. Sarmiento and Prof. May Anne E. Mata

Prof. May Anne E. Mata of the UP Mindanao Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science served as a Plenary Speaker at the 2025 National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Annual Scientific Conference and 23rd Mindanao Regional Cluster Assembly, held in Davao City on September 18, 2025. Prof. Mata spoke on “Complexity Thinking for a Sustainable Future: Systems, Stories, and Science from Mindanao.” Her talk also relates to her role as Complexity Science Division Chair of the UP Intelligent Systems Center. Prof. Mata was named “Outstanding Young Scientist” by the National Academy of Science and Technology in 2025. She also serves as UP Mindanao Research Director and Center Director of the Mindanao Center for Disease Watch and Analytics (DiWA). 

On the same conference and assembly, Asst. Prof. Jon Marx P. Sarmiento of the School of Management was inducted as a Regular Member of the NRCP, the sole inductee on the occasion. Prof. Sarmiento’s research interests are in Agricultural Economics‬, ‪Applied Economics‬, and Management‬. He has a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Western Australia.

The 2025 NRCP Conference and Regional Cluster Assembly carried the theme “Empowering a Sustainable Future: Science, Technology, Social Innovation, and Human Capital in Global Challenges.” It was hosted by the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) at its Main Campus in Obrero, Davao City.
