Students and faculty raise issues and concerns at sectoral consultations

Students raised their issues and concerns before Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao and her team at the Sectoral Consultation with UP Mindanao Students held on February 10, 2025, at the Kalimudan Covered Court. At the face-to-face meeting, student leaders brought up the need for more learning spaces, facilities, and equipment. Other issues and concerns were public transport fare rates, personal safety and security on campus, pending harassment cases, and financial support for academic and athletic activities.

Chancellor Murao (in the photo above) and her team responded to each issue with possible actions or clarifications. “I am glad you used this time to air your concerns,” she said. “It is important that we hold these sectoral consultations to make our plans for the next three years. We will gather your concerns to plan our steps,” she said.

Student Affairs Director Assoc. Prof. Maria Stella Salazar (in the photo above) opened the consultation with a presentation of the Office of Student Affairs’ accomplishments in the first term of Chancellor Murao.

Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao and her team noted the corresponding issues and concerns raised and suggestions put forward by the faculty members in the Sectral Consultation with the Faculty held on February 11, 2025, at the University Library. Prof. Juma Novie Alviola (in the photo above), OIC of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA), opened the consultation with a presentation of the OVCAA’s highlights in the first term of Chancellor Murao.

Among the issues and concerns raised were the criteria for the distribution of available faculty items, opportunities for promotions, and the selection of the next vice chancellor for academic affairs. Grants for research, research dissemination, and faculty development, as well as budget allocations per unit, appointments for new instructors, and their salaries were likewise raised.

Gender-related issues, conflict resolution, grievance, lived names, leadership training, student relations, and anniversary venues were also raised and discussed.

It was agreed that consultations with the faculty be conducted on a regular basis.
